Upgrade VMware Aria Suite Lifecycle

VMware Aria Suite Lifecycle (formerly vRealize Suite Lifecycle Manager) helps organizations speed up initial deployments, minimize admin tasks of ongoing product management, and ensure best practices at the same time. Whether you choose to use an individual product or different suite editions, always start with vRealize Suite Lifecycle Manager to maximize the benefit of the vRealize product portfolio by reducing the time and effort invested.

When upgrading to VMware Aria Suite Lifecycle, it is important to understand changes in component behavior for version 8.10 that can affect the upgrade process. Understanding changes from previous versions of VMware Aria Suite Lifecycle can help in your upgrade planning. For a complete list of new features in VMware Aria Suite Lifecycle 8.10, see the Release Notes for version 8.10 releases.

Prerequisites

The upgrade procedure for a VMware Aria Suite Lifecycle environment can be rather complex and may require careful planning. Determining the steps of the upgrade procedure depends on several factors, mainly

Product dependency: Please make sure below products are compatible with the current and target versions of VMware Aria Suite Lifecycle using VMware interoperability Matrix

VMware vCenter Server
VMware vSphere
VMware Workspace One Access
VMware Aria Operations (formerly vRealize Operations)
VMware Aria Operations for Logs (formerly vRealize Log Insight)
VMware Aria Operations for Networks (formerly vRealize Network Insight)
VMware Aria Automation (formerly vRealize Automation)
VMware Usage Meter etc…

Back up or take a snapshot of the source VMware Aria Suite Lifecycle appliances that you want to upgrade

Upgrade Path:  Please make sure we have an upgrade path available to the target version or we need to go with any interim versions using VMware interoperability Matrix

Verify that you meet the system requirements. See System Requirements.

Verify that no critical tasks are currently in progress in vRealize Suite Lifecycle Manager. The upgrade process stops and starts vRealize Suite Lifecycle Manager services and reboots the vRealize Suite Lifecycle Manager virtual appliance, which might corrupt tasks that are in progress.

If you are upgrading VMware Aria Suite Lifecycle through a repository URL or CD-ROM, ensure that you download the vRealize Suite Lifecycle Manager upgrade binary from My VMware portal in advance. The file name must be -VMware-vLCM-Appliance-8.X.X.XX-XXXXXXXX-updaterepo.iso.

Upgrade Procedure

Review the current version and verify the compatibility and upgrade path, As I am running with VMware Aria Suite Lifecycle 8.7., it is compatible with other platform products and direct upgrade path is available to 8.10.

From the My services dashboard, click Lifecycle Operations and click Settings.

Click System Upgrade.

Click Take Snapshot to take Appliance snapshot before upgrade

Confirm the vCenter FQDN and credential where the appliance is deployed

Once Snapshot is taken, Select the repository type for VMware Aria Suite Lifecycle updates.

Check Online – You can check if the upgrades are available online. To use this option, the VMware Aria Suite Lifecycle virtual appliance must have access to vapp-updates.vmware.com.

URL – Enter your repository URL for updates. To use this option, extract the ISO containing the upgrade files to a private repository. Do not use a private repository that requires authentication for a file access.

CD-ROM – You can update the VMware Aria Suite Lifecycle Appliance from an ISO file that the appliance reads from the virtual CD-ROM drive.

Note: – In my environment I have connectivity from appliance to internet hence I am selecting Online option which will show you the latest supported version. If you are targeting any interim version, please use other methods to upgrade.

Click CHECK FOR UPGRADE – After few minutes, VMware Aria Suite Lifecycle displays a message indicating whether there are updates available.

Select the Repository Type, and then click UPGRADE and select the checkbox on product snapshots under Prerequisite, and then click Next.

Click RUN PRECHECK. Once the precheck validation is complete, you can then download the report to view the checks and validation status.

Click Upgrade after a successful precheck validation.

After a few minutes, login to the VMware Aria Suite Lifecycle UI and check for the upgrade successful message in the settings > System Upgrade.

On an upgrade completion, VMware Aria Suite Lifecycle displays the message upgrade completion message. If you do not see this message, wait for a few minutes and refresh the UI Also delete the snapshot taken once everything is verified and functional.
